Ithaca is Gorges!

Ithaca, NY is known for the gorges in the area. It's slogan is "Ithaca is gorges", which are gorgeous. Kureyon took an afternoon trip to a state park with a large gorge with waterfalls. Trees and plants grow right out of the side of the cliffs, so tree roots grab on anywhere and how they can. The walls of the gorge reach 400 feet high in places.

Kureyon Visits the Gardens

Colorways come from many different sources of inspiration. Kureyon visits one possible source. The Cornell Botanical Gardens where he stopped for a photo op in a patch of Queen Ann's lace, chicory, and small sunflowers.

On the Silver Spray

Kureyon's last day at Lake George. They went out on the Silver Spray for a ride across Lake George. The Silver Spray is a lovely old wooden motor boat. Lake George is 32 miles long and 1 mile wide.

Kayaking with Becky

Our traveling yarn gnome visited Lake George in Upstate New York. It is a beautiful deep, clear, cold, fresh water lake surrounded by low mountains. While there, Kureyon stayed at the Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondaks, which is about two thirds of the way up on the west side of the lake. He enjoyed kayaking followed by hiking. The hike took Becky and Kureyon several miles into the woods above Silver Bay to Uncas Falls.

Making New Friends

Our traveling Kuryeon made a new friend whilst in Maryland. Connie Johnson was Becky's mentor and teacher. Becky worked in her yarn store during her high school years. Becky attributes much of her knitting knowledge to Conne's patience and expertise. Connie taught her magic invisible seams and Becky calls her the "Original Seam Queen!" Connie is 89 and her vision is not the greatest anymore. Despite this, she is still knitting aran sweaters for her great grandchildren. She says she knits them by touch! What an amazing legacy to witness.

Kuryeon Goes to Maryland

We have discovered a traveling ball of Kureyon (think wandering gnome...). See the world through the String of Purls traveling yarn. This picture is of the oldest known cherry tree in the world located in Kyoto, Japan. Robyn recently traveled there with her husband. However there is a free pumpkin hat pattern from Knitting On The Net that includes the directions for a leaf! How cute is that?? Perhaps your little one wants to be a dragon this Halloween. There are even patterns for hats with dragon spines on top. A few even have tails! Jean Greenhowe has developed a series of holiday toys that are quick to knit up, like Halloween Ghosties. These patterns are also free!

Meet the Staff: Anne

Anne is not just an avid knitter she is our very own in house designer and color coordinator! How did she end up at String of Purls? It found her! She used to knit with Robin and Susie at her home and the idea of String of Purls was born. She joined the team a year later.

She first tried to learn knitting as a child from her grandmother, but really took to it in 1981 while working a high stress advertising job. She was looking for a way to relax. Her favorite aspect of knitting is creating. Her husband, Bob, always asks her, "Is that the pattern you are NOT follow?" I think that pretty much sums it up! She loves to put her own spin on things or just create something new that comes to mind.

Anne says if she absolutely has to name a favorite yarn, it would be alpaca. She loves the way it drapes and is as soft as cashmere. Her favorite pattern is her own Alpaca Vest. She enjoyed designing it and it is knit in one piece. She hopes to make a summer lacy version of this vest. The best project she ever completed was the bed jacket from "Romantic Knits" because of it's beautiful shaping and eyelet lace edging.

Aside from knitting and designing, Anne loves to scuba dive. For those of you on Ravelry, she's the one knitting underwater in her profile! As for the guilt level of her yarn stash...prepare yourself. "0 guilt!...the more the better!"

Knitting Helps Memory

According to a recent article from BBCAmerica, "Engaging in a hobby like, reading a book, making a patchwork quilt or even playing computer games can delay the onset of dementia." In contrast, watching too much TV can actually speed up memory loss. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic asked volunteers about their daily activities within the past year and also asked how mentally active they had been between the ages of 50 to 65. "Those who had during the middle age been busy reading, playing games or engaging in craft hobbies like patch working or knitting were found to have a 40% reduced risk of memory impairment." These same activities were found to reduce the risk between 30-50% in later life.

New Cascade Has Arrived!

Meet the Staff: Robyn

String of Purls opened its doors on November 1st 2003. Robyn was one of the original proprietors. When asked "How did you find String of Purls?" She replied, "It found me." Robyn has always lived in Omaha and is a loyal member of the community. She would like to see more people knitting everywhere -- at restaurants, movies, sporting events, parks, etc. She enjoys gardening, reading, and travel.

Robyn learned to knit in junior high school from her babysitter. She finds knitting can be relaxing and challenging, and she always has a "social" knitting project going as well as a more complicated project. She enjoys stitch challenges to color work. As for favorite yarns, that can change daily. At the time of this "interview" she was addicted to Kidsilk Haze (lovingly referred to at the store as "Cracksilk Haze"). The best project she ever completed was an entrelac skirt that started out as a top!

When asked the "Guilt-Level of Her Stash Size," Robyn answered, "7!" However, she will be an "empty nester" this fall, so will have a lot more time for knitting!

Meet the Staff: Elizabeth

I suppose it's only fair that I post about myself as I am part of the staff and I've twisted everyone else's arms for pictures and personal info!

I started knitting when I moved to Omaha just over three years ago. I found String of Purls after learning how to knit from Lorna Weirda (now, friend and knitter who attends Sit N'Knits at String of Purls). She was offering me suggestions of places to connect with people since I was new to the area. I've been working for the shop as the "internet girl" for about six months now, updating the website, sending out the monthly e-letter, and generally keeping technological panic to a minimum! I'm also the group moderator for Ravelry String of Purls group (xopheliax) and I keep our Facebook profile updated. I have to say I LOVE my job! It relates to everything I enjoy: computers, knitting, photography, journalling, organizing, etc...

Currently, I'm in love with Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk (aran) and Manos Cotton Stria yarns, although I'm sure that will change at any point without warning. I enjoy knitting challenging patterns (like cables or unique designs), but I always have a "mindless" pattern on hand for when I'm too tired to think. I'm knitting a baby blanket for our first little one due in January and a luxurious Alpaca silk cardigan for myself for the cooler weather. Really...that yarn is such a dream...I want to swim in it.

Anyway, the "Guilt-Level of Stash Size" would have to be at least a 5...but I figure I get lots of points taken off for having every scrap of yarn assigned to a potential project!! Right?

Meet the Staff: Sally

I like to call her Sassy Sally...as she was the inspiration for our Sassy Skein "Sassy Sally" skirt and outfit! Sally is one of the newest members of our team and has made a great impact on the store. Most of the new arrangements of yarns and displays you see around the store are her ideas in action. Her inspirations and energy make any day an exciting day to visit the store!

Sally learned to knit from her mother when she was expecting her first child. She enjoys the relaxing and creative nature of knitting. Her favorite yarns are Cash Vero by Cascade, Bamboo, and Misti Alpaca. Favorite patterns are too many to list and the worst mistake she ever made is "Too many to count!" Sally discovered String of Purls when they first opened. When she is not knitting she is gardening, reading, or spending time with her grandchildren.

When asked the "Guilt-Level of your Stash Size" on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest), she candidly answered, "9!"

Meet the Staff: Becky O...AKA Becky S. #2!

If you're wondering, this Becky used to be called "Becky O." so we could avoid confusion. Well, don't you know she went off and got married and now she is Becky S., too! We won't hold it against her. I think we've resorted to "Tall Becky" and "Little Becky" or something like that, but I'm not quite sure!

Becky's mother cast on for her one day. The phone rang, so Becky looked at the pictures in a "Learn to Knit" booklet and figured out the rest! She was about 7 or 8 years old. Becky has lived in Omaha nearly all her life, since the 3rd grade. She applied for a teaching job at String of Purls before they opened.

What are Becky's favorites? She loves the variety and "being able to create a thing of beauty out of sticks and string." Her favorite yarn is wool, because it is so forgiving. As for patterns, Becky likes anything by Norah Gaughn, Just One More Row, or Cabin Fever. She also likes anything done in Fair Isle or Norwegian color patterns. She says she would like to see more patterns that are truly wearable and more flattering. Becky currently teaches a class on the Heartbeat Tee which is one such design. She also designs patterns. She was inspired to start designing by Meg Swansen at a knitting camp.

Becky admits the worst mistake she ever made was on a pair of off-set sleeves in Fair Isle. She had to ladder down and back up on both sides in color pattern 13 stitches wide for 11 inches!!! I'd say that qualifies as a nightmare! Becky also says this was the best project she ever completed. She called it Nebraska Sunsets.

"Guilt-Level of Stash Size" (10 being the highest): 1! Either she has a very small stash or she has accepted that lots of stashed yarn is OK!

Knitting In Public Day

Ro learned to knit when she was 8 or 9 years old. She pestered her mom to make things for her stuffed animals until she finally caved in and just taught her how to knit! Aside from knitting, Ro enjoys biking, traveling, watching her friend's triplets grow, and building homes with Habitat for Humity.

Ro came to Omaha from Red Oaks, Iowa to attend Creighton Univeristy. She taught in Omaha Public Schools for 33 years. Now that she is retired she is enjoying her time at String of Purls and keeping up her other interests.

What are Ro's favorites? Color, texture, and the satisfaction of completing a project! Her favorite yarn, at least for now, is CashVero by Cascade. She does say there are very few yarns she avoids as she likes most yarns. Ro finds modular knitting patterns especially fun because she likes geometrics.

"Guilt-Level of Stash Size:" Ro gives it about a 5 or 6 (10 being the highest!) and says she's been working on it!

Meet the Staff: Becky S.

Becky Shuster is originally from Annapolis, Maryland. She learned to knit from her mother when she was about 9! When she was in high school had the unique and fortunate opportunity to work in a yarn shop. The owner, Connie, was more than happy to continue her knitting skill development.

Becky has lived in Omaha for 22 years. She knew Robyn (one of our fearless leaders), and heard she was opening a yarn shop. Becky not only knits and works at String of Purls, she also teaches classes and designs patterns.

What are Becky's favorites? Cables. Apparently, her first sweater was not fancy enough so she decided to knit a cabled sweater for her second try. Did I mention she was 12 at the time and it was only her second project? Becky also loves Cascade 220 yarn. She says, "It makes wonderful garments, felts beautifully, and comes in a zillion colors!" What more could a knitter ask for, right?

As for patterns, Becky could not narrow the list to one favorite pattern. She would like to see more patterns for men and children. These are harder to find than patterns for infants and women. You can view some of Becky's patterns on our website.

As for the "Guilt-Level of Stash Size," Becky gave no comment!

Phyllis has done it again! This precious infant dress is knit in Pure Pima by Berroco. Pima cotton yarn is softer and more resistant to pilling than most other cotton yarns. The dress is a basic yoke dress with a back button opening. An eyelet casing around the bodice and sleeves allows for adding a delicate ribbon. This is the perfect dress for the precious little one in your life. It would make an adorable dedication or christening dress. The Bella Basic Yoke Dress will be an easy project for an advanced knitter or a great challenge for an intermediate knitter. Simple crochet stitches are used on the edgings.

Meet Judith Brodnicki. She is a local resident of Omaha and a graphic artist. She currently works at Offutt AFB preparing graphics for use in classroom training, as well as part time at Village Stationary in Countryside Village (adjacent to String of Purls) preparing ads, invitations, and other stationary items. She is often the creative source behind String of Purls logos, advertisements, and mailings.

She started knitting in 4-H...sometime around seventh grade! Losing interest in stright needles, she dropped the hobby for several years. She picked it back up when she took Becky's sock knitting class at String of Purls. Between socks and circular needles, she was hooked! She's been knitting ever since. Of course, then she took a yarn dyeing class and was instantly hooked on that as well... She dyes yarn, she knits socks, she designs patterns...she does it all but the cleaning! And who could blame her? We're so happy to be able to share her passions with you!

Search patterns to find the perfect pattern to match that yarn you bought in Greece but have no idea what to do with it… See what other knitters say about a yarn or pattern. One More Thing you can do with a Rectangle

In the continuing litany of "one more thing you can do with a rectangle", here is another testament to "less is more"...

OK, so you can knit a scarf right? Then try this, a scarf with one buttonhole and three buttons. Voila! 3 different looks depending upon which button you choose. The key to this simple piece is to combine really beautiful yarns with really distinctive buttons. I ended up using 4 different yarns and handmade raku buttons. (Actually, I found these incredible buttons first and combined yarns to go with them. Kind of like decorating a room around that perfect pillow!)

The Ultimate "Carpet Bag"

Nancy has outdone herself this time. Take a look at this incredible bag made by holding 12 yarns together and knit into a tight cable pattern. Chunky Alpaca Vest --I'll take one in EVERY Color!

We simply love the quality, colors and texture of Misti Alpaca yarn. I got so excited about it, I decided to design a cropped vest out of the chunky weight. This yarn is heaven to work with, puts up on a #9 needle and is as soft, if not softer, than cashmere. Our customers have been knitting this up in different colors and it has been fun to see the effects.

The Cropped Alpaca Vest is made in one piece from the bottom up. Once you've completed several inches of ribbing (a little boring, but hang in there...), the work is divided in two and you begin the back with a mirrored cable pattern. Then the work is divided again at the neck edge and the front is worked in separate panels over the shoulder down to the waist. The front panels are grafted to the front ribbing. I used a twisted stockinette to give the open areas some texture and the really works well in the alpaca.

Though the pattern is sized, I wanted it to be easily adjustable for various body types. So, if you wanted to, you could shorten the ribbing and extend the body for a more classic look with longer lines.

Chris Bylsma Workshops Inspire Creativity

During the course of three workshops, Chris Bylsma has us thinking about yarn in a whole new way. Suddenly our stashes are new found treasures from which to create a new Crayon Box Jacket, a garment or bag. We had more fun playing with color and texture and discovered creative ways to incorporate old yarns with new.

In the Stashology class, Chris asked us take 10 different yarns pulling them together into one large strand. We cut the strand into 24" pieces and draped them around our neck. Then, without looking, we randomly pulled individual pieces and knit one after the other. The result was stunning! So much for planning--this new technique lets "the yarn do all the work," as Chris says.

We spent one day learning the construction of the Crayon Box Jacket and plan a reunion fashion show on September 16. Meanwhile we are all playing with color and texture variations on mitered squares. The jacket flows easily. By picking up stitches and casting on edges, there are almost no seams. Stay tuned for photos of the fashion show in September!

We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Chris for making the journey to Omaha. Her graciousness and expertise will have a lasting impact on us and String of Purls customers.

Debbie Macomber Delights Knitters

The crowd stretched beyond the front door as avid fans of Debbie Macomber awaited the mistress of the finely woven tale. String of Purls was delighted to welcome Debbie for her return visit to Omaha. Who knows where she finds the time to write, knit and support many worthy causes such as Warm Up America and The Omaha Hearing School. Wherever it comes from, her energy is contagious and her stories hilarious.

Debbie manages to appease her reader's appetites with a bevy of new books including the recently released Back on Blossom Street. Just one more winner on a long list of knitting books and novels.

Though Debbie needed to move on, we held a slumber party to knit squares for Warm Up America. Were we ever surprised when Debbie reappeared and joined us later that evening!

Blue Moons Don't Come that Often

Omaha's Biggest Baby Shower

We wonder if Annie Modesitt has any idea how much fun we are all having with her Twisted Garter Float Shrug featured in the Vogue Knitting Fall 2005. It's an ingenious idea...Annie took a basic circle shape and placed provisional openings for sleeves. The twisted garter pattern creates visual momentum especially when knit with Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted colorways. Just look at some of the great combinations our customers have come up with.

Though our gardens are calling, we're still pretty nutty about knitting...so as the temperatures warm we somehow manage to keep the needles clicking. Everybody at SOP is playing with several recent arrivals of new spring and summer yarns.

Here are just a few of our new spring and yarns:
Manas Cotton Stria, a 100% Peruvian cotton that is extremely soft and well saturated in color. Each wonderful color has its own "washed" look with slight variations. Becky just finished making this simple summer top, currently being offered as a class.

Just in from Nashua are Cilantro and Creative Focus. Cilantro is a medium weight cotton great for summer tops or summer bags. Creative Focus, also medium weight, has a twill which offers texture. The colors ranges are bright to muted. You'll love the versatility of these cottons.

Jay Rich's Shibori Workshop - All Sizes, Shapes and Colors

String of Purls recently hosted a Shibori Knitting workshop conducted by Jay Rich, a gifted local knitter/spinner/weaver. Jay walked us through the essentials of this ancient Japanese knitting and dye technique. By banding a "resistance" object, such as a marble, rock or fish bobber into a piece of feltable knitting, you can create the most appealing shapes and formations during the felting process. He also showed us how to create "gathered" lines by running thread through the fabric. This produced an accordion like crease. We experimented with different weights of yarn from fine sport weight wools to heavier felters like Brown Sheep's Lamb's Pride.

We appreciate Jay's expertise and inspiration and are already at work dreaming up ways to incorporate Shibori into felted bags, clogs and scarves.

The Mobius Bowl Never Looked So Good!

Recently, one of our little customers showed us a new use for the Mobius Bowl. Cat Bordhi's, A Second Treasury of Magical Knitting could have used this photo to demonstrate the many practical uses for the bowl. When Louise used her Manos del Uraguay to whip up this bowl, I'll bet she never imagined it could look this adorable!

Mason Dixon's Kay Gardiner's Log Cabin Workshop

Amid the merriment of the holidays String of Purls hosted a Log Cabin Workshop conducted by Kay Gardiner, co author of the Mason Dixon Knitting. We're so lucky that Kay hails from Omaha so we get to see her when she is in town.

A full house of knitters leapt into the Log Cabin technique making cushions from Lamb's Pride Cotton Fleece yarn. Kay selected an array of colors and demonstrated how to choose complimentary hues. It was enlightening to see the differences between cushions composed of many colors versus those with only a few.

Founders of Brown Sheep Yarn Visit String of Purls

Last week we had a wonderful visit with the founders of Brown Sheep Yarn, Janet & Harlan Brown and thier partner and daughter Peggy Wells. In this world of manufacturing abroad, it is refreshing to see a domestic producer of fine yarns right here in our own back yard. Harlan rode all day across Nebraska with our order in the seat next to him...now that's delivery!

We love the new grouping of Brown Sheep Handpaints and Burly Spun yarn.

Misti Alpaca is Our Pick

Robyn and I must have walked the floor ten times in search of the best Alpaca we could find. After much investigation, and a few blisters later, our verdict is....Misti Alpaca!

The delivery just arrived and we couldn't be happier with our choice. Misti Aplaca is 100% Peruvian baby alpaca. Misti offers a range of traditional neutrals but branches out to vibrant greens, reds and blues. We'll be carrying four weights including lace, sport, worsted and chunky. The Chunky offers a bi-tone twist which coordinates with solid colors. Misti's Alpaca Royal, the worsted weight is the finest quality baby alpaca and so soft you'll swear it is cashmere.

Be Sweet is in! Beautiful Yarn & A Wonderful Cause

It's new and it's FUN. We just recieved a shipment of bright and muted colors from Be Sweet yarn. As much as we love the yarn, we love knowing that the proceeds from the sale of this yarn go back into the hands of those in South Africa who produced it.

We are carrying Knobby, a baby mohair with generous slubs and a hint of metalic wrap. The Magic Balls are a melange of mohair boucle, mohair and subtle novelty yarns strung in sequence. Beautiful colorways! The Ribbon Ball has delicate organza ribbon strips with a kid mohair boucle for a delicate, feminine and contemporary look. Slubby is a thick and thin made from the fleece of Angora goats. We are impressed with this yarn's rich dye work.

Boxes and Boxes of New Cascade and Lamb's Pride....Felter's Heaven!

Our felters will be in heaven with the arrival of 28 colors of Cascade 220 and Lamb's Pride Worsted.

Mike, the UPS deliveryman just rolled his eyes unloading box after box of Cascade 220 and Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride...all in the 100 degree heat! After we "watered" Mike down, we tore into the happy boxes filled with a rainbow of colors. Ali and Susan went right to work putting each color into mini-pyramids for inventorying. They look so pretty we were hesitant to shelve the yarn!

String of Purls Participated in First Omaha Sew Quilt & Embroidery Festival

We had great fun creating a "mini" String of Purls exhibit at the Sew Quilt and Embroidery Festival at the Qwest Center June 15-17. So many of our knitting customers talk about their "cross addictions" with the fiber arts. These days people are using yarn for knitting, quilting and everything in between. A good example of this is Jean Mills, a fiber artist recently located in Omaha from the Seattle area. We are lucky to have such a gifted artist who integrates yarns, fabric and embellishments to create panoramic fiber canvases. Jean conducts workshops on her techniques--a great way to expand your love of combining color and texture.

Just Back From Fall Market

We made some wonderful discoveries at market last week! It was an act of restraint not to bring home everything we saw...just a lot of it! This fall will feature soft and colorful alpaca and richly dyed silks and ribbons with embedded beads. Innovative needle felting is also going to be very big.

In addition to our usual great yarns, we found a few new yarn companies that were irresistible. Be Sweet is a womans' cooperative from South Africa. It was a pleasure ordering from a company whose proceeds benefit the hard working hands who produce this stunning yarn. You'll see a combination of yarns with subtle novelty touches including beads, Be Sweet mohair and ribbon. Tilli Tomas from Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts is showing exquisite silks and ribbons stranded with beads...a luxurious treat! We nabbed the most adorable needle felting projects from Decadent Fibers who featured felted vegtables...believe it or not, carrots and pumpkins, in bright colors...Fanatica Fibers offers the most whimsical needle felted ornanments and animals.

It is never too early to think about holiday gifts. We found the perfect, "not so time consuming" gift creation. MagKnits introduces a new magnitized closure suitable for creating a necklaces or belt. Available in matte silver and gold and different shapes, MagKnits turns your knitting into jewelry. You will have to stop by the shop to see what we mean!

Trendsetter has come up with an ingenious mesh product that allows non-knitters to enjoy working with beautiful yarns and ribbons. With this woven mesh you can finger weave yarns to create dramatic, textural scarves and shawls. I just put one together and it only took me three hours to make a beautiful, metalic ribbon fringed scarf.

It is going to be an exciting fall at String of Purls. Aside from the new items we have talked about, we will be offering new line of alpaca and linen and more colors of Lorna's Laces. Our new fall yarns arrive later this summer. In the meantime there is plenty of summer knitting to do!

Kids Summer Knitting Camp

There will be no lack of knitters in the next generation! So many of our customer's kids have been requesting a gathering of their own. We are happy to announce a Summer Knitting Camp for kids age 10 and up.

Here are the details:

Beginner and Intermediate sessions available
Classes meet Monday through Friday, 1:00-3:30 pm
Kids will make fun projects from scarves to purses.

Beginner: Learn to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off
June 5-9
July 10-14
July 31-August 4

Intermediate: Learn to work with circular and double point needles. Also learn to increase, decrease and read a pattern.
June 12-16
July 17-21
August 7-11

There will be a wrap up party for all groups to show and tell on August 13, 4-5 pm

Cost: $75.00 payable upon sign up

No Head Uncovered - Omaha's Premie Hat Angel

Among our richest experiences at String of Purls are the stories that dawn our doors. The knitting community here is made up of people walking through life in all its happiness, sadness, even comedy. Each day we see the many ways knitting touches lives. It might be a knitter visiting from far away whose spouse is going through a mediical treatment, a mother and daughter taking time to be together, a busy executive dropping by to momentarily escape the office (we won't tell....)

We have to share one special story. Last week our friend Madeline and her daughter stopped by to find a soft baby yarn. Madeline explained that she donates premie hats to Omaha's Bergan Mercy Hospital. I asked Madeline how long she had been making her hats. In an energetic voice she said that she had been knitting since she was 12, is now in her 80's, and began doing premie hats in 1993. This begged the question, "How many hats do you think you have made"? With a little encouragement from her daughter, Madeline said, "oh, 4000 or so". Amazing!

Madeline spends about two and a half hours per hat. (A grand total of 9500 hours!) No two hats are alike and each season she works in holiday themes.

Most touching of all are the small, small hats she makes for the families of the children who pass. "That way the grieving parents have something to take home with them at a very sad time".

Madeline says she knits the hats to "give back" for the close brushes she has had with her health as a child and adult. So many are the beneficiaries of Madeline's gratitude. Madeline, our hats are off to you!
